Exhibition and Graphic Design:
This exhibition organized by ICN gallery (NPO Hexaproject) is the second international exhibition on the theme of “Ma 間”. The first was “Ma 間”: Design Aesthetics in Japanese Printing Technologies – ‘Nippon Creative Printing Show vol.1’, held at Les Arts Decoratifs, Louvre, Paris in December 2008 and was part of the “Kansei-Japan Design Exhibition” commemorating the 150th anniversary of French-Japanese Exchange (Organizer: Ministry of Economy, Japan External Trade Organization). The previous event focussed on introducing print works by Japanese graphic designers. This time with an exhibit also at TENT LONDON the scale has broaden focussing on six symbolic creations of contemporary Japanese culture including product designers, sound artists and more. Production, curation, graphic design, exhibition design, poster design and flyer design are all based on the original concept by the creative director Hideyuki Kume and curator Hisami Omori. For this exhibition the spacial design and graphic design organically link to each other to create the visual world of “Ma”.

Outline:
If I have to define my design concept as one word, I might say “discovery”. Most people just recognize their surroundings with basic knowledge given by schools or their parents. It means they just have superficial perceptions of things around them. However, someone who tries to work in a design industry must exert oneself to break the perception of objects around us. For instance, a cup can be anything. Your hands can be a cup. Or your pen lid can be a cup, too. Likewise, designing is the way of expression that tries to discover something new in our daily lives and break the perception of objects in order to provide unceasing reasons for their existence.
